Sacred Stone from Nan Madol Returned After 23 Years

Pohnpei, FSM – A significant piece of Pohnpei’s cultural heritage has been returned after more than two decades. A stone taken from the ancient and sacred site of Nan Madol in 2002 was recently mailed back to the Pohnpei State Government, accompanied by a letter of apology and a $500.00 check.
The sender, who will remain anonymous, expressed deep regret for removing the rock and acknowledged the cultural and spiritual significance of Nan Madol. In the letter, they stated their desire to make amends and restore the stone to its rightful place.
Governor Stevenson A. Joseph officially received the package and promptly turned over the $500.00 check to the Director of the Department of Treasury and Administration, Sihna Lawrence. The stone was then entrusted to the Chief of Tourism, Kukulynn Gallen, who will oversee its return to Nan Madol, where it will be placed back in its original setting.
Nan Madol, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, holds immense cultural, historical, and spiritual significance for the people of Pohnpei and the wider Pacific. The Pohnpei State Government remains committed to preserving and safeguarding this treasured site for future generations.
