Kolonia, Pohnpei: January 16, 2024 — Governor Stevenson A. Joseph and Lt. Governor Francisco L. Ioanis welcomed a courtesy call from Mr. Asterio Takesy, Chairman of the Joint Committee on Compact Review and Planning (JCRP), along with Director Ehpel Ilon and Chief Negotiator, Leo A. Falcam, Jr. The meeting included updates on the current status of the ratification of the Compact of Free Association with the United States of America.
Despite the conclusion of negotiations, internal political matters have delayed the ratification by the US Congress (House and Senate), leading to funding through continuing resolutions at FY23 levels. The delegation also shared information on a pending amendment to the law that created JCRP, allowing its continued functioning post-ratification.
Governor Joseph and Lt. Governor Ioanis expressed gratitude for the visit and updates, with Governor Joseph affirming support for JCRP’s extended function. He pledged to submit the necessary supporting documents to further strengthen collaboration on this important matter.
The courtesy call reflects the ongoing commitment to constructive dialogue and collaboration between Pohnpei State and the Joint Committee on Compact Review and Planning.
