COURTESY CALL ON GOVERNOR JOSEPH BY GOVERNOR OF KOCHI PREFECTURE

Kolonia, Pohnpei: January 16, 2024 — The Honorable Seiji Hamada, Governor of Kochi Prefecture in Japan, paid a courtesy call on the Honorable Stevenson A. Joseph during his visit to the Federated States of Micronesia (Chuuk and Pohnpei), coinciding with the 35th anniversary of bilateral relations between Japan and the Federated States of Micronesia. Governor Joseph warmly welcomed Governor Hamada and his delegation, including H.E. Nobuo Kogiyama, Japanese Ambassador to the Federated States of Micronesia, and other dignitaries.

During the meeting, Governor Joseph warmly welcomed the Governor and his delegation to Pohnpei.  He shared the current state of the emergency situation in Pohnpei State, expressing regret that the visit couldn’t take place under normal circumstances. Governor Hamada acknowledged the strong bond between Japan and the FSM, emphasizing collaborations in government, sports, health, and personal connections. Both leaders expressed a desire for further collaboration, with Governor Joseph agreeing to explore additional avenues.

Before concluding the courtesy call, Governor Joseph extended sincere condolences to Governor Hamada and the people of Japan for the recent earthquake and tsunami that occurred at the beginning of the year.

The visit marks a significant milestone in the enduring friendship between the Federated States of Micronesia and Japan, highlighting the depth of cooperation across various sectors over the past 35 years.
