Saladak, Pohnpei: February 22, 2024 – His Royal Majesty Sahngoro, Nahnmwarki of U, and His Royal Highness IsoNahnken of U, warmly welcomed Ambassador Pereric Hogberg of the Kingdom of Sweden, along with his wife and Counsellor, to the Kingdom of U. The event, hosted by Mr. William Kostka, Executive Director of the North Pacific Office of the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) and a native of U, served as a platform for fostering diplomatic relations and showcasing the collaborative efforts between Sweden and the Federated States of Micronesia.
The visit provided a unique opportunity for stakeholders in the Federated States of Micronesia National Government and Civil Society Organizations to share updates on various projects supported by the Swedish Government through the SPC. The U Corona Volunteers (UCV) also participated, highlighting the impactful initiatives that have been undertaken with Swedish support.
Governor Stevenson A. Joseph and First Lady Aina Garstang, along with Mr. Douglas Comer and his son Jake, esteemed archaeologists and conservationists currently undertaking a LIDAR project at Nan Madol, were among the distinguished attendees. Nan Madol, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is of great historical significance, and the Comers’ work aims to conserve the ruins and create detailed maps through LIDAR technology to benefit future generations.
During his brief remarks, Governor Joseph expressed heartfelt gratitude on behalf of the people of Pohnpei for Ambassador Hogberg’s visit, acknowledging the continuous support extended by the Government of Sweden to the people of Pohnpei. Governor Joseph especially commended Ambassador Hogberg for taking the time to visit the Kingdom of U, emphasizing its unique standing in the Guinness Book of World Records with the shortest name.
Governor Joseph also introduced the Comer father-son duo and commended their significant contribution to the conservation and mapping efforts at Nan Madol. Using state-of-the-art LIDAR technology, the archaeological project aligns with the shared commitment to preserving cultural heritage and ensuring its legacy for generations to come.
Ambassador Hogberg expressed his appreciation for the warm welcome and reiterated Sweden’s commitment to strengthening partnerships with the Federated States of Micronesia. He noted Sweden’s long history of peace and no wars. He shared Sweden’s support of Human rights, gender equality, and rights of the young people through SPC. The event marked a milestone in fostering cooperation and understanding between the two nations.
The visit concluded with a sense of shared accomplishment and a commitment to continued collaboration for the betterment of the region. The Kingdom of U and Pohnpei look forward to furthering its ties with the Kingdom of Sweden, building on the foundation of friendship and mutual respect.
