KOLONIA, Pohnpei, FSM: August 5, 2024 – Mr. Jorg Anson, Administrator of the Office of Fisheries and Aquaculture, delivered a welcoming speech on behalf of Governor Stevenson A. Joseph at the 2nd FSM National Fisheries Summit held at the Pacific Missionary Fellowship auditorium. Governor Joseph could not attend due to his state visit to the Southern Islands of Pohnpei. The summit gathered dignitaries including FSM Vice President Aren B. Palik, Governor of Kosrae Tulensa Palik, H.E. Jennifer Johnson, US Ambassador to FSM, H.E. Nobuo Kagomiya, Japan Ambassador to FSM, and other national and state officials.
In his speech, Mr. Anson emphasized the critical importance of the fisheries sector to the FSM, highlighting its role in the economy and cultural heritage. He acknowledged the significant event as a platform for key stakeholders to discuss sustainable management and development of fisheries resources. He also underscored the shared benefits of the unprecedented referendum that allowed the sharing of fishing revenues with the four states.
Mr. Anson stressed the need for cohesive and sustainable fisheries management, aligning Pohnpei’s State Strategic Development Plan (SDP) with the National Oceanic Fisheries Investment Policy (NOFIP). He called for collective efforts and a shared vision, particularly in light of recent FSM constitutional amendments requiring greater state involvement in the NOFIP’s implementation.
Mr. Anson concluded by expressing gratitude to President Simina for highlighting the summit’s importance and Pohnpei’s commitment to active participation. He announced the nomination of up to eight Pohnpei participants for the summit, reaffirming the state’s dedication to shaping the future of the fisheries sector. He welcomed all participants and called for collaborative efforts towards a sustainable and prosperous future for FSM fisheries.
The 2nd FSM Fisheries summit will run from August 5 to 9, 2024.
