Peilapalap, Pohnpei: January 17, 2024 – Governor Stevenson A. Joseph and Lt. Governor Francis L. Ioanis convened a crucial meeting with local chief executives to strategize and coordinate efforts in response to Emergency Declaration 2024-01. The gathering, held at the Emergency Operations Center (EOC), brought together key stakeholders to ensure a unified and effective response to the ongoing situation.
Director of the Department of Public Safety (DPS), Mr. Patrick Carl, emphasized the importance of conducting Initial Damage Assessments (IDAs) from each Municipality. These assessments will play a critical role in evaluating each Municipality’s capacity and determining the need for types of assistance. Mr. Carl briefed the attendees on the significance of prompt and accurate IDAs to streamline the deployment of resources.
Mr. Nixon Anson, General Manager of Pohnpei Utilities Corporation (PUC), provided updates on PUC’s proactive measures to address water-related challenges. These efforts include tapping into water sources at higher elevations, exploring and opening new wells, and preparing water filling stations for the outer communities. Mr. Anson’s presentation underscored the commitment of PUC to ensuring access to clean and safe water for all residents.
Governor Joseph and Lt. Governor Ioanis encouraged the local chief executives to take a proactive leadership role in their respective areas as Pohnpei navigates the challenges posed by the current emergency declaration. The declaration, mandated by law, will remain in effect for 30 days.
During the meeting, Governor Joseph shared insights from his recent visit with President Simina, highlighting the importance of collaboration and swift action. He urged the timely submission of IDAs to facilitate a comprehensive and targeted response to the prevailing situation.
The collaborative efforts of all stakeholders, including government officials, public safety agencies, and utility providers, underscore Pohnpei’s resilience and determination in the face of challenges. The administration remains committed to safeguarding the well-being of its citizens and ensuring a coordinated response to Emergency Declaration 2024-01.
