Kolonia, Pohnpei, January 15, 2024 — Governor Stevenson A. Joseph and Lt. Governor Francisco L. Ioanis met with the Disaster Coordinating Committee to assess and address the ongoing challenges faced by Pohnpei State. The primary focus of the meeting was an update on the recent fire incidents, particularly at the Dekehtik dumpsite.
Chief of Fire and Rescue Division, Mr. Ainstain Joseph, provided a comprehensive update on the Dekehtik dumpsite fire. He reported that the fire, while no longer considered dangerous, is expected to be well under control within the next day or two. Mr. Joseph also highlighted successful efforts in containing fires at Parem, Nett, and Lehn Mesi, Kitti, with collaboration from the respective Municipal Governments.
Lt. Governor Francisco L. Ioanis expressed concern and sought information regarding the Dekehtik dumpsite from Director of the Department of Public Safety, Mr. Patrick Carl. Mr. Carl confirmed that an investigation into the incident is currently underway, reflecting the administration’s commitment to ensuring transparency and accountability.
Nixon Anson, General Manager of Pohnpei Utilities Corporation (PUC), outlined PUC’s plans to address the challenges posed by the ongoing dry weather conditions. These plans include continuous improvements to the existing water system, the establishment of water filling points across the island at Lukop, Diadi, Wapar, and Nankopwermen, installation of two new wells, and the addition of pipes to pump water from upper ponds.
Governor Joseph, recognizing the significance of water accessibility, especially for smaller islands surrounding Pohnpei, emphasized the priority status of the water filling points. These initiatives are crucial for providing essential resources to communities during these challenging conditions.
Representatives from various departments within the committee also shared updates and challenges from their respective areas. The Department of Health Services highlighted their efforts in responding to health-related concerns arising from the dry weather conditions.
