Rutgers University Scientists Meet with Governor Joseph to Advance Food Security Initiatives

Kolonia, Pohnpei: January 18, 2024 – A team of esteemed scientists from Rutgers University, including Dr. Joseph Simon, Dr. Ramu Govindasamy, and Dr. Dena Seidel, accompanied by Hubert Yamada, Director of Resources and Development, and Mr. Mark Kostka from FSM Department of Resources and Development, paid a courtesy call on Governor Joseph to discuss the progress of a groundbreaking food security policy. Ms. Shirley Ligohr, Overseas Development Assistance Coordinator joined the Governor.

The purpose of the courtesy call was to update Governor Joseph on the development of a comprehensive food security policy initiated during the previous administration. This policy is designed to be locally relevant, considering the unique conditions, culture, and traditions of Pohnpei.

Governor Joseph warmly welcomed the Rutgers University delegation and expressed his appreciation for their dedication to enhancing food security in the region. He outlined his vision for addressing food security challenges through sustainable Agriculture and Aquaculture practices, emphasizing that it remains a top priority for his administration.

The visiting scientists were pleased to hear Governor Joseph’s commitment to addressing food security and appreciated his focus on leveraging Agriculture and Aquaculture as key solutions. They highlighted the importance of incorporating traditional farming methods into the policy framework, emphasizing sustainability and the preservation of indigenous practices.
