Pohnpei Women’s Council Extends Courtesy Visit to Governor Stevenson A. Joseph, Discusses Preparations for Pohnpei International Women’s Day

Kolonia, Pohnpei: February 21, 2024 – President Emy Musrasrik-Carl, Secretary Bernolina Hedson, and Maria Donre, representing the Pohnpei Women’s Council (PWC), paid a courtesy visit to Governor Stevenson A. Joseph to extend congratulations and discuss preparations for the upcoming Pohnpei International Women’s Day. President Musrasrik-Carl began the meeting by congratulating Governor Joseph on his election and commitment to the well-being of the people of Pohnpei. The discussions then shifted to the Pohnpei International Women’s Day, a significant and upcoming public holiday that celebrates the achievements and contributions of women in the state. President Musrasrik-Carl highlighted the collaborative efforts of the Pohnpei Women’s Council. The Council plays a crucial role in facilitating and organizing activities for Pohnpei International Women’s Day, emphasizing the importance of recognizing and empowering women in the community. President Musrasrik-Carl also noted that while PWC’s role is crucial, Women’s Day should be a State-driven event. Accompanying the Pohnpei Women’s Council were Mr. Santos Abraham and Ms. Serleen Jimmy from the Division of Social Services, the responsible state agency overseeing the event. They provided insights into the preparations and long-term plans for the celebration. Governor Joseph expressed his appreciation for the dedication of the Pohnpei Women’s Council and the Division of Social Services in organizing such a meaningful event. He affirmed his support for initiatives that promote gender equality and celebrate the achievements of women in Pohnpei. The meeting concluded with a gift of a handcrafted dolphin to Governor Joseph and a sense of optimism and collaboration, showcasing the commitment of both the government and the Pohnpei Women’s Council to uplift and empower women in the community.

Governor Stevenson A. Joseph Commends Enipein Native Mr. Katerson Moya for Exceptional Performance at World Aquatic Championships

Dekehtik, Pohnpei: February 21, 2024 – Governor Stevenson A. Joseph warmly welcomed Mr. Katerson Moya from Enipein, Kitti, who proudly represented the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) at the esteemed World Aquatic Championships held in Doha, Qatar. Mr. Moya showcased his exceptional talents alongside teammates Tasi Limtiaco, Kestra Kihleng, and Taeyanna Adams, collectively embodying the spirit of Micronesian athleticism on the international stage. Governor Joseph extended heartfelt congratulations to Mr. Katerson Moya for his outstanding achievements at the World Aquatic Championships. The Governor commended Mr. Moya’s dedication, skill, and sportsmanship, highlighting the positive representation he brought to Pohnpei and the FSM. Governor Joseph expressed pride in the accomplishments of the entire FSM Swim Team and encouraged Mr. Moya to continue his training and pursuit of excellence. Recognizing the significance of regional sports, Governor Joseph noted that the next Micronesian Games are scheduled for July of this year in Majuro, the Republic of the Marshall Islands. He encouraged Mr. Moya and the team to channel their commitment towards preparing for this important event, fostering camaraderie and sportsmanship among Micronesian nations.

UNICEF Pacific Deputy Representative Rosni Bashu Pays Courtesy Visit to Governor Stevenson A. Joseph

Kolonia, Pohnpei: February 21, 2024 – UNICEF Pacific Deputy Representative, Ms. Roshni Bashu, along with UNICEF Chief of Mission in Micronesia, Mr. Cromwell Bacarezza, and UNICEF staff, recently visited Pohnpei State to strengthen collaboration and express gratitude for the ongoing partnership. The visit included discussions with Governor Joseph, who welcomed the UNICEF team’s support, particularly in matters concerning children and drought response efforts. During the courtesy call, Deputy Representative Bashu expressed gratitude to Governor Joseph for the trust placed in UNICEF, emphasizing the organization’s commitment to expanding its team and providing continuous support for the people of Pohnpei. Governor Joseph who was joined by First Lady Dr. AIna Garstang, Director of the Department of Education, Mr. Stanley Etse, and Chief of Social Services Noriekka Lekka reciprocated the appreciation, acknowledging UNICEF as a team of experts and expressing gratitude for their assistance, especially in responding to drought-related challenges. He emphasized the importance of Pohnpeian culture in caring for children and reassured the UNICEF team of the state’s commitment to moving forward, even if progress may be gradual at times. Chief Bacarezza shared insights into UNICEF’s current programs, highlighting initiatives related to health, nutrition, and social services. He highlighted UNICEF’s culture-driven approach and spoke of ongoing programs, including assistance with hygiene kits to outer islands, solarization initiatives, child protection policy collaboration with Pohnpei State social services, and efforts to extend maternity leave to six weeks and ongoing projects, such as addressing health and malnutrition issues and collaborating with the state government on various fronts, including the census. Chief Bacarezza stressed the organization’s focus on culturally sensitive approaches, a sentiment that resonated with Governor Joseph, who noted that Pohnpeians live their culture daily. In a collaborative effort, Governor Joseph shared that Pohnpei State has drafted a food security policy and expressed hope that UNICEF would review and contribute to the policy. The governor emphasized the significance of incorporating local foods to prevent non-communicable diseases and enhance nutrition efforts. The courtesy call concluded with mutual appreciation for the partnership and a shared commitment to working together for the well-being of the children and communities in Pohnpei State.
