Accompanying them was Mr. Ramil Ilagun, the General Manager of MedPharm, who had a prior meeting with Governor Joseph earlier this month. The purpose of the visit was to engage in discussions with Governor Joseph on the latest breakthroughs in medical science, prompted by proposed legislation aiming to establish a medical diagnostics center in Pohnpei. The delegates shared insights into cutting-edge innovations, particularly focusing on advanced MRI technology that could revolutionize medical diagnostics in the region. Additionally, the delegation introduced Governor Joseph to the latest advancements in automated telehealth, showcasing a machine akin to an ATM that provides instant readings for blood pressure, blood glucose, body mass index, and various other diagnostics. Pingelap Atoll: February 17, 2024 – Governor Stevenson A. Joseph, accompanied by a delegation of key officials, undertook a visit to Pingelap Atoll to assess the severe drought conditions affecting the region. The Governor, during his visit, consulted with Pingelap Mayor Smithy Clark and local leadership to gain insights into the challenges posed by the water shortage and discussed collaborative efforts to mitigate the impact on the community. Amidst the critical situation, relief supplies reached Pingelap from generous donors in Pohnpei via the National Fisheries Corporation vessel (NFC) North Star. The arrival of supplies was coordinated by the Department of Public Safety, led by Director Mr. Patrick Carl, along with Local Government Liaison Suannrita Ladore and Chief of Fire and Rescue Division Mr. Ainstain Joseph. The relief supplies included a significant addition – a solar-powered reverse-osmosis unit capable of producing 360 gallons of fresh water per day. This crucial equipment, set up and operated by Mr. Dudley Lorin from IOM-Micronesia, aims to address the immediate water needs on the island. Similar reverse-osmosis units donated by IOM-Micronesia are being distributed across the outer islands as part of the broader relief effort. During the visit, Governor Joseph, along with Mayor Clark, inspected water wells throughout the island, gaining firsthand knowledge of the challenges faced by the community. The Governor emphasized the importance of swift and coordinated action to alleviate the impact of the drought and pledged continued support from the government. Joseph, fostering an open dialogue on postal services and addressing key concerns related to the FSM Postal Services. Governor Joseph warmly welcomed Acting Postmaster General Jimmy and her delegation, expressing gratitude for the essential role played by the postal system in facilitating communication and commerce within the Federated States of Micronesia. The ceremony, graced by the presence of Pohnpei Sports Development Officer Mr. Ramsie Joab, witnessed Governor Stevenson A. Joseph administering the oath of administration, with Mrs. Elsy Rose Santos holding the Bible for Mr. John. Following the swearing-in, Mr. John expressed his gratitude to Governor Joseph, the Legislature, and U Municipality. He humbly acknowledged the trust placed in him and assured that he would strive to do his best in collaboration with his fellow Commissioners. Renowned for their unwavering commitment to the preservation of cultural heritage sites, the Comers have been actively involved in studying and safeguarding Nan Madol for many years. Their visit to Pohnpei includes a pivotal presentation on their groundbreaking findings at Nan Madol, utilizing Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) technology to unearth the intricacies of this architectural marvel. During discussions with Governor Joseph, the management and conservation of Nan Madol took center stage. Dr. Comer emphasized the need for proactive measures to address challenges such as over-vegetation and siltation that pose threats to the site’s integrity. Dr. Comer referred to Nan Madol as “an incredible engineering feat,” underscoring its significance as a global cultural treasure. Kolonia, Pohnpei: February 14, 2024 – The U.S. Embassy Kolonia’s Senior Defense Official/Defense Attache’, CDR Jason Neal, USN, along with Assistant Defense Attache’, Mr. Kyle Papish, and Lt(jg) Kevin Reed, Officer in Charge of the U.S. Navy Seabees detachment, recently paid a visit to Governor Stevenson A. Joseph to discuss ongoing and future collaborative efforts between the U.S. Department of Defense and Pohnpei State. The visit commenced with warm welcomes and congratulations extended to Governor Joseph, where Mr. Papish introduced CDR Neal as the Senior Defense Official overseeing all U.S. Department of Defense activities in the Federated States of Micronesia. CDR Neal informed Governor Joseph that his purview includes all matters related to the U.S. Department of Defense within the Federated States of Micronesia. One highlight of the discussion was the introduction of Lt(jg) Kevin Reed, who heads the U.S. Navy Seabees detachment currently engaged in a crucial project in Sapwalap. Governor Joseph expressed his gratitude to the U.S. Embassy, especially the Seabees, for their swift response to Pohnpei State’s request for assistance following a recent emergency declaration. Lt(jg) Reed elaborated on the ongoing project, highlighting the collaboration with the Department of Education, with a focus on PICS High School. The Seabee team is actively involved in addressing water infrastructure needs to support local schools. Governor Joseph also expressed appreciation for the U.S. Coast Guard Fast Cutter Oliver Henry’s support in transporting essential supplies, including food and reverse osmosis units, to the remote islands of Kapingamarangi and Nukuoro. Mr. Papish shared additional initiatives, including the upcoming return of Task Force Koa Moana, comprising U.S. Marines, to provide further assistance. He emphasized the importance of the annual Joint Committee Meeting (JCM), where a comprehensive review of ongoing and proposed Department of Defense activities is presented. Joseph to provide updates on the state’s readiness for the upcoming Micronesian Games scheduled for July 2024 in Majuro, Republic of the Marshall Islands. The primary objective of the meeting was to present a comprehensive overview of the proposed budget for Pohnpei’s participation in the Micronesian Games. The proposed budget outlines the allocation of resources to ensure a successful representation, envisioning a total delegation of 232 individuals, including athletes, coaches, and support staff. The approval of this budget is now pending the endorsement of Governor Joseph and the 11th Pohnpei Legislature. The Pohnpei Sports Commission is actively engaged in the meticulous process of identifying and confirming athletes who will proudly represent the State of Pohnpei in the 12 sporting competitions scheduled for the Micronesian Games. Generous donations from individuals and organizations, including 24000 gallons of water, 1,517 sacks of rice, 203 cases of ramen, 190 (5lbs) pieces of flour, and hygiene kits from UNICEF, have been instrumental in providing immediate relief to the affected populations. Pohnpei State authorities are in the process of transporting these essential items to the outer islands. The National Fisheries Corporation (NFC) has graciously offered a vessel to support the transportation of the donated items and assessment teams to expedite the relief efforts. Pohnpei State is committed to conducting thorough damage assessments in the Outer Islands to understand the extent of the crisis and tailor the response accordingly.
